Title: Exploring Political Geology in value chains and production networks
Abstract: In light of public discourses on the dynamics of mineral markets and securing mineral and material supply for industrial production in Europe, I will argue for the concept of ‘Political Geology’. I will draw upon the global value chain and global production network literature and the case of rare earth elements to pinpoint the essentially human and social processes behind exploring a mineral occurrence, to mining the deposit and processing the rocks to product components and end-products. In essence, I will argue that the disciplinary discourse of Geology turns from ‘the natural’ to ‘the social’ through socio-political processes of information exchange, knowledge build-up and valuation which facilitate exploration, mining and processing of mineral occurrences.
