The University of Oulu once again placed in the 401–500 category on a list of the world’s best universities in the Shanghai university ranking published today. This ranking is mainly based on information from 2015.
The University of Oulu was ranked in a total of 52 fields. The university placed in the top 200 globally for the subjects of ecology, electrical and electronic engineering, telecommunication engineering, biological sciences and dentistry and oral sciences. Tourism geographies was the only Finnish programme to place in the Hospitality and Tourism Management category. Only 100 universities are ranked in this small scientific field, in comparison to 500 in the larger fields. The ranking of academic subjects in different fields was published a couple of weeks ago.
In many cases, the categories in the ranking do not correspond to the structure of the organisations. With regard to the University of Oulu, for example, the Life Sciences / Biological Sciences category includes publications from the Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine and from the Faculty of Science.
Five Finnish universities were ranked in the world’s top 500. The University of Helsinki remains in 56th position. The University of Eastern Finland had a ranking of 301–400. Aalto University and the University of Turku joined Oulu in the 401–500 category.
The list was topped by Harvard University and Stanford University from the United States and Cambridge University from the United Kingdom.
The annual ranking is performed by Shanghai’s Jiao Tong University, and it ranks universities on the basis of the number of articles and citations in prestigious scientific journals, the number of researcher citations and the number of Nobel and Fields Prizes received by alumni and staff. Since the numbers of publications and publications in the best journals are counted, the success of universities is calculated in relation to their size.
